Market Journal Examines Impact of Herbicide-Resistant Weeds, Southern Rust - UNL CropWatch; 8/2013

August 16, 2013

On this week's Market Journal UNL Weed Scientist Stevan Knezevic discusses the growing problem of herbicide-resistant weeds in Nebraska. Rotating crops, integrating control measures, and varying herbicide modes of action are key steps in slowing resistance development. A handy chart from the Extension publication, Guide for Weed Management in Nebraska with Insecticide and Fungicide Information (EC 130), lists various herbicide modes of action, their chemical families, and active ingredients to make management easier.

Also on this week's program, available on YouTube's Market Journal channel:

  • Wade Johannes, Commodity Risk Manager with Central Valley Ag, analyzes how corn and soybean markets reacted to the USDA’s latest round of reports. Wade also discusses selling strategies for old and new crop.

  • Tamra Jackson-Ziems, UNL Extension plant pathologist, says southern rust has been confirmed in 20 Nebraska counties. Tamra advises growers on scouting and treating the disease, as well as how to handle damaged corn.

  • Loren Giesler, Extension plant pathologist, details what soybean producers can learn about soybean cyst nematode at the SCN Field Days August 21 at Waverly, August 22 at Madison, August 27 at Peru and August 28 at Herman. SCN have been confirmed in 54 Nebraska counties, including as far west as McCook.

  • Al Dutcher, Extension state climatologist, gives his forecast for the coming week.
