Great Plains Wheat Breeders Discuss New Lines, Trials - UNL CropWatch, June 14, 2013

June 14, 2013

The Annual Great Plains Wheat Breeders' Field Day was held last week at the UNL Agricultural Research and Development Center near Ithaca.

Once a year public and private wheat breeders meet to discuss their new lines in the regional performance trials (coordinated by Dr. Robert Graybosch, USDA-ARS, Lincoln) and the important business of the Great Plains wheat breeding community. The site of this meeting rotates among Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska. This meeting was originally scheduled to meet in Texas, but due to late freezes and hail, it was moved to Nebraska where the eastern wheat crop is doing well.

This year virtually all of the commercial and public breeding programs were represented, as well as some of the major end users. At the business meeting a number of important topics were discussed such as how best to develop useful quality samples so that we can communicate better with the milling and baking industry on the end-use quality of experimental lines nearing relesase. This collaboration of public-private scientists with the processing chain typifies the wheat industry, which is working to provide the grower, the elevator operator, the miller, the baker, and most importantly the consumer, with the finest quality wheat grain.

The event was hosted by the USDA Agricultural Research Service and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Nebraska Foundation Seed Division was a major sponsor and provided lunch for the group.
