Corn, Soybean Planting Nearly Done; Winter Wheat Jointing

Statewide, corn planting was virtually complete and soybean planting was winding up, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 9% very short, 28% short, 60% adequate, and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 17% very short, 31% short, 51% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Crop Progress

Winter wheat condition rated 8% very poor, 19% poor, 33% fair, 38% good, and 2% excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 80%, ahead of 76% last year, but behind the five-year average of 88%. Winter wheat headed was 28%, well ahead of 6% last year, but behind 33% average.

Corn planted was 97%, ahead of 94% last year, but equal to the average. Corn emergence was at 74%, ahead of 56% last year but near the average of 71%.

Soybeans planted were 88%, well ahead of 59% last year and 76% average. Soybean emergence was at 42%, well ahead of 15% last year and the average of 35%.

Sorghum planted was at 57%, well ahead of 35% last year and the average of 44%. Sorghum emergence was at 13%, ahead of 4% last year, but equal to the average.

Oat condition rated 2% very poor, 17% poor, 41% fair, 39% good, and 1% excellent. Oat emergence was at 96%, ahead of 91% last year, but near the average of 95%. Twenty-seven percent of the crop had jointed and 6% had headed, ahead of 3% last year, but behind the average of 10%.

Dry bean planting was at 5%, near 4% last year, but behind the average of 15%.

Alfalfa hay condition rated 1% very poor, 10% poor, 39% fair, 43% good, and 7% excellent. Alfalfa hay first cutting was 10% complete, ahead of 2% last year, but behind the average of 24%.

Pasture and range condition rated 12% very poor, 15% poor, 40% fair, 32% good, and 1% excellent.
