Field Updates

April 20, 2007

Karen DeBoer, Extension Educator in Cheyenne County: The wheat in our area is generally in good condition. A few of the leaf tips are brown from the cold temperatures, but the majority of the wheat was still in the tillering stage and had not jointed. We may lose a few of the main tillers, but the younger tillers should still produce.

Jennifer Rees, Extension Educator in Clay and Webster counties: Wheat is shooting new leaves in the Clay, Webster and Nuckolls counties area. None of the wheat in Clay County had jointed prior to frost and the growing point was not damaged in most fields I've examined. Alfalfa is shooting new growth from the crown in most fields. Some alfalfa weevils also were observed in fields. Many producers are in the field applying anhydrous, disking, and a few have started planting.
