Beef Verification's the Key to Foreign Markets

April 20, 2007

Market Journal

This week's Market Journal features a story on why verification is so important to foreign cattle markets.

There are four levels of information for exporting beef, according to Galen Erickson, UNL extension beef feedlot nutrition specialist. They are: source verified, age verified, hormone free and antibiotic free. Erickson talks with program host Doug Jose, UNL extension agricultural economist, about these types and why it's important to calculate the costs so a producer knows how much price enhancement is needed to make it profitable. Rick Rasby, UNL extension beef specialist, urges producers to at least keep basic records pertaining to age source.

Also on the program this week:

  • Sell Some Wheat, with Paul Burgener, UNL Extension ag economics analyst
  • Foreign Markets for Nebraska Beef, Greg Ibach, Nebraska director of agriculture
  • Toolbox Tips, Al Prosch, UNL Extension ag economics educator
  • Weather, with Al Dutcher, UNL state climatologist

Market Journal is broadcast Fridays at 12:30 p.m. on DishNetwork NAUHS 9411, Saturdays at 7 a.m. on NET1 and Sundays at 9 a.m. on NETV2 (all times central). Visit the Market Journal Web site at marketjournal.unl.edu to watch current or previous programs.
