Late Planted Corn

Late Planted Corn

May 4, 2007

Market Journal

This week's Market Journal features interviews with UNL Extension agronomists looking at the effects of delayed corn planting.

Learn why corn planted before May 15 isn't likely to have a yield reduction, although producers may need to adjust some practices with later planted corn. Richard Ferguson, UNL extension soils specialist, says fertilizer applications may need to be adjusted and Mark Bernards, UNL extension weeds specialist, recommends killing weeds before planting to prevent yield reductions.

Also on the program this week:

  • Impact of large retailers on economic development , with Azzeddine Azzam, UNL professor of agricultural economics
  • Livestock Market Analysis: Swine, Al Prosch, UNL extension ag economics educator
  • Weather, with Al Dutcher, UNL state climatologist

On the next Market Journal (May 11-13): In the future motorists might be filling up with cellulosic ethanol rather than corn-based ethanol. Wally Wilhelm, a USDA plant physiologist, will look at the challenges of producing and handling the biomass material and the long-term impact on soil conservation and retaining the productivity of the soils.

Market Journal is broadcast Fridays at 12:30 p.m. on DishNetwork NAUHS 9411, Saturdays at 7 a.m. on NET1 and Sundays at 9 a.m. on NETV2 (all times central). Visit the Market Journal Web site at marketjournal.unl.edu to watch current or previous programs.
