Pasture Walk Set for August 2

July 13, 2007

Grazing systems, paddock sizing, noxious weed control, grass utilization and other topics will be the focus of UNL Extension's Pasture Walk, set for Thursday, August 2, at three sites across Stanton County. There is no charge for the tour.

Northeast Research and Extension Center Interim Director Dennis Bauer and Extension Educator Terry Gompert will be on hand, along with Scott Wessel, wildlife biologist with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission; Dana Larsen, Natural Resources Conservation Service State Range Management Specialist; and other NRCS personnel.

Tour topics will include:

  • Planned grazing systems;
  • Grass utilization, stocking and grass identification;
  • Animal weight, scoring and forage consumption;
  • Paddock sizing;
  • Noxious weed control - chemical and biological; and
  • Available cost-share programs.

The tour will go to three operations, starting at 3:30 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. The tour will begin at Lawrence Valentine's operation near Stanton where participants can view expired CRP to switchgrass and rotational improvements. To get there, from Norfolk, follow Highway 24 toward Stanton. On the southeast edge of Norfolk, turn right (south) on Channel Road, by Andrew Van Lines and State Yards. Go south 4  miles on Grand View Drive and 558th Avenue (paved road angles a bit before straightening on 558 Ave.) The second stop will be at the Ron Pohlman operation which Pohlman and Eric Hansen manage. This stop features side-by-side comparisons of large vs. small paddock size and other unique rotational comparisons. The third and final stop will be at the Loren Pestel operation near Stanton from 7 to 8 p.m. It will feature cool/warm season grass rotation and chemical and biological leafy spurge weed control.

Maps will be provided at the first site. Beverages and snacks will be provided at each stop with additional food, drink and restrooms provided at the Stanton Fairgrounds following the last stop.
