Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or morehead, contained 2.45 million cattle on feed on April 1. This inventory was down 1% fromlast year but 2% above April 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during March totaled 360,000 head, up 3% from 2007 and7% above March 2006.

Marketings of fed cattle during March totaled 390,000 head, up 5% from both lastyear and two years ago. This ties March 2000 for the highest March marketings since the seriesbegan in 1993. Other disappearance during March totaled 10,000 compared with 10,000 duringMarch 2007 and 15,000 during March 2006.

National Report

Nationally. cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots withcapacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.7 million head on April 1, 2008. The inventory wasslightly above April 1, 2007 but 1% below April 1, 2006. This is the second highestApril 1 inventory since the series began in 1996.

Placements in feedlots during March totaled 1.74 million, 11% below 2007 and5% below 2006. Marketings of fed cattle during March totaled 1.84 million, slightly below 2007 and6% below 2006. Other disappearance totaled 63,000 during March, 12% below 2007and 30% below 2006.
