Market Journal: Global Warming and Its Effects

Market Journal: Global Warming and Its Effects

June 30, 2008

On this week's Market Journal, a Stanford University researcher discusses the effect of global warming. A one degree tempeature increase can create major climatic changes, according to David Lobell, senior research scholar at Stanford University's program on food security and environment. The average world temperature is increasing slightly, he said. Even if the rate of carbon emissions is reduced, it will take a number of years to reduce the impact of the emissions already in the atmosphere, Lobell said.

Also on the program this week:

  • Cattle market update — Mike Briggs, Seward, feedlot operator;
  • Advantages of No-till — Bob Klein, Extension cropping systems specialist;
  • The developing role of carbon emissions in food marketing and world trade -- Carole Brookins, Public Capital Advisors; and
  • Weather — Al Dutcher, Nebraska state climatologist

Next week's Market Journal will feature Peter Goldsmith, director of the National Soybean Research Laboratory, discussing value-added soybean production and how soybeans help add protein to starch-based diets around the world.
