Nebraska Wheat Forecast Drops 9%

Based on May 1 conditions, Nebraska's 2009 winterwheat crop is forecast at 67.2 million bushels, down 9% from last year's crop, according tothe USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field office. Average yield isforecast at 42 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from last year but 2 bushels above the 10-yearaverage.

Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.60 million acres, down 70,000 acres or4% from last year. This would be 94% of the planted acres, compared to 95%harvested last year and the ten-year average of 93%.

The May 3 wheat condition was rated 71% good to excellent, above both last year and average. Crop development was a few days ahead of last year but about one week behind normal due to cool temperatures during April.

May 1 hay stocks of 935 thousand tons are down 6% from last year and 18%below the 10-year average.

National Wheat Forecast Down 20%

Nationally, the winter wheat production forecast of 1.50 billion bushels is down 20% from 2008. Expected area for harvest as grain or seed totals 34 million acres, down 14% from last year. Based on May 1 conditions, the U.S. yield is forecast at 44.2 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from the previous year.

Hard red production is down 16% from a year ago to 871 million bushels. Soft Red production is down 31% and totals 422 million bushels. White production totals 208 million bushels, down 5% from a year ago. Of the White production total, 20.8 million bushels are hard white and 188 million bushels are soft white.
