USDA Forecasts 22% Increase for Nebraska Corn Crop, 8% for Soybean - UNL CropWatch, Aug. 13, 2013

On Monday, USDA released its state and national forecasts for yields, based on August 1 conditions.

Corn. Nebraska's corn crop is forecast at 1.58 billion bushels, up 22% from last year, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 9.80 million acres, up 8% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 161 bushels per acre, up 19 bushels from last year.

Nationally, corn production is forecast at 13.8 billion bushels, up 28% from 2012. If realized, this will be a new record
production for the United States. Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average 154.4 bushels per
acre, up 31.0 bushels from 2012. If realized, this will be the highest average yield since 2009. Area harvested for grain is
forecast at 89.1 million acres, unchanged from the June forecast but up 2% from 2012.

Soybean. Production in Nebraska is forecast at 223 million bushels, 8% above last year. Area for harvest, at 4.75 million acres, is down 5% from 2012. Yield is forecast at 47 bushels per acre, up 5.5 bushels from last year.

Nationally, soybean production is forecast at 3.26 billion bushels, up 8% from last year. If realized, production will be the third largest on record. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 42.6 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year. If realized, the average yield will be the fifth highest on record. Area for harvest is forecast at 76.4 million acres, down less than 1% from June but up slightly from 2012. Planted area is estimated at 77.2 million acres, down less than 1% from June.

Wheat. The 2013 winter wheat crop is forecast at 41.8 million bushels, unchanged from the July 1 forecast, and the smallest production since 1944. Average yield is forecast at 36 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but down 5 bushels from last year and the lowest since 2006.

Nationally, wheat production, at 2.11 billion bushels, is up slightly from the July forecast but down 7% from 2012. Based
on August 1 conditions, the United States yield is forecast at 46.2 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but down
0.1 bushel from last year.

Sorghum. Yield is forecast at 66 bushels per acre, up 7 bushels from last year. Production of 5.28 million bushels is up 49% from a year ago.

Oat. Production is forecast at 2.88 million bushels, up 14% from last month and the largest since 2005. Yield is forecast at 72 bushels per acre, up 9 bushels per acre from last month.

Dry edible bean. Production is down 21% from last year.

Sugarbeet. Production is down 15% from 2012.

Alfalfa. Alfalfa hay production is forecast to be 8% above last year. All other hay production is up 16%.
