From understanding the markets to crop management to weather predictions, the 2012 Sorghum Profitability Seminars to be held February 1-2 at Fairbury and Red Cloud,will provide information to help producers and agribusiness stay on top and in the know about grain sorghum. The seminars highlight topics that farmers can apply directly to their operations. Registration begins each day at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and sorghum cookies and a chance to visit with exhibitors.

The programs, coordinated by the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Producers and the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, will be held at the following sites: 

• Fairbury — Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Fairgrounds Exhibition Building, 56885 PWF Road
• Red Cloud — Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Community Center

The seminars are sponsored in part by the Sorghum Checkoff and UNL Extension and focus on new ideas and updates on production and management information to make sorghum production more profitable. Application is pending for continuing education credits for certified crop advisors.

This year’s topics include

• Current Markets: Defining Risk and Recognizing Opportunities by AgWest Commodities
• Managing Sorghum for Success by Dr. Kraig Roozeboom, Kansas State University
• Nutrient Management by Dr. Dave Mengel, Kansas State University and Randy Pryor, UNL Extension Educator
• Focus on Pheasants by T.J. Walker, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission
• Sorghum Checkoff-Renewed Optimism, Bill Greving, USCP Board Member, Prairie View, Kan.
• Marketing Sorghum Beyond the Border by Kevin Roepke, U.S. Grains Council
• Protecting Nebraska’s Agriculture by Duane “Dewey” Lienemann, UNL Extension
• Weather Outlook: Will LaNina Bring Dry Conditions by Al Dutcher, UNL State Climatologist

The noon meal will feature sorghum soup and sandwich. Vendors will have exhibits to showcase new products, production/management information, and new technology.

Registration at the door is $5; however, members of the Grain Sorghum Producers Association will be admitted free.
