Nebraska Crops Report - Corn and Soybean Near Last Year - UNL CropWatch, June 20, 2011

For the week ending June 19, below normal temperatures slowed crop development and rain delayed field work, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. High winds were prevalent across the state and hail fell in numerous areas, damaging crops. Flooding along the Missouri and Platte rivers continued to generate concern for crops in low lying areas. Dry bean, proso millet, and sunflower seeding were active in the west.

  • Corn condition rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 19% fair, 65% good, and 11% excellent, near last year.
  • Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 19% fair, 70% good, and 8% excellent, near year earlier. Soybeans emerged was 96%, ahead of last year’s 92% and the five-year average of 94%.
  • Wheat conditions rated 1% very poor, 14% poor, 27% fair, 50% good, and 8% excellent, below last year’s 70% good to excellent but near the 56% average. Ninety-three percent of the wheat had headed, behind last year’s 95% and tje 98% average. Wheat was beginning to turn color in southern counties and was 30% statewide, ahead of 26% last year but 6 days behind the 51% average.
  • Sorghum conditions rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 17% fair, 76% good, and 5% excellent, above last year. Sorghum planting was 97% complete, ahead of 90% last year and 95% average. Sorghum emergence was at 81%, ahead of 75% last year and the 79% average.
  • Oat condition rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 12% fair, 76% good, and 10% excellent, above last year’s 85% good to excellent and above the 72% average. About 65% of the state's oats had headed, behind last year's 71% and the 72% average.
  • Dry beans planted was 91%, near 90 last year and equal to average. Dry Beans emerged was 40%, behind 54 last year and 63 average.
  • Proso millet planting was 63% complete, ahead of 40% last year and 50% average.
  • Alfalfa rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 16% fair, 70% good, and 12% excellent, near last year’s 83% good to excellent but above the 65% average. First cutting of alfalfa was 83% complete, ahead of last year's 80% and the average of 79%.
  • Wild hay conditions rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 22% fair, 67% good, and 9% excellent, below 88% good to excellent last year.
  • Pasture and range conditions rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 15% fair, 69% good, and 14% excellent, well below last year’s 91% good to excellent but above the 68% average.
