UNL CropWatch Oct. 1, 2010: UNL Program Helps with Planned Extension of Family Farm Operations

Oct. 1, 2010

UNL Agricultural Economics is again hosting Returning to the Farm, a program for families bringing another person or persons into the farm/ranch operation.

It is designed to help families and farming/ranching operations who are considering this change to develop successful working arrangements and a financial plan that will meet the needs of multiple families. This can help young farmers get a solid start in a farming or ranching operation, keep the farm or ranch in the family, and ensure a comfortable retirement for all involved.

Led by UNL agricultural economics professors, Returning to the Farm is a two weekend program set for Dec. 10-11 and Jan. 7-8 at Lincoln's Holiday Inn Downtown. Participants are expected to attend both weekends. The presenters strongly recommend that all members of the farm/ranch management team attend both sessions. Material taught during the second weekend will be progress from materials taught the first weekend.

During the program participants will:

  • Write long- and short-term business and family goals
  • Identify communications techniques and work preferences within the work/family team
  • Recognize personalities and learn to work with each individual’s strengths
  • Analyze your operation’s financial performance
  • Evaluate various operating alternatives

Registrations are due November 29. Additional information is available online at
