July 30, 2010

On this week's Market Journal an extension specialist in agricultural economics at the University of Missouri looks at how agriculture both adds to and offsets greenhouse gases emissions. Ray Massey says that uUnder current rules only the largest 100 to 150 agriucltural operations will be required to report emissions.

Other topics on this week's program with host Doug Jose, extension farm management specialist, are:

  • Hog Markets with Ron Plain, University of Missouri extension ag economist, who says hog weights are down due to the summer heat. Exports have increased and retail pork prices for June set a record.
  • Ethanol Update with Wally Tyner, professor of agricultural economics, Purdue University, who says it is critical for the ethanol industry to increase the blending rate above 10%. The EPA is considering a number of alternatives and is expected to make a ruling this fall.
  • Beef Outlook with Mark McCully, Certified Angus Beef, LLC, says there is a niche market for high-quality beef, even in a depressed economy.
