February 19, 2010

Notable water scientists will present free, memorial lectures on Feb. 24 and March 3 as part of UNL’s weekly water and natural resources seminar series.

On Wednesday, Feb. 24, Richard P. Hooper, president and executive director of the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science Inc. will present the seminar series' annual Maurice Kremer Memorial Lecture. The annual Kremer lecture acknowledges the water and natural resources legacy of former State Sen. Maurice Kremer of Aurora, whose foresight, vision and leadership in the unicameral on water issues initiated the water planning process in Nebraska.

Hooper, a former U.S. Geological Survey research hydrologist and chief scientist for the National Stream Quality Accounting Network and Hydrologic Benchmark Network, will speak on advancing hydrologic science through community engagement.

The consortium, based in Washington, D.C., works to unite the nation's water information and make it universally accessible and useful.

The following Wednesday, March 3, Ariel Dinar, environmental economist and director of University of California, Riverside's Water Science and Policy Center and Department of Environmental Sciences, will present one of the series' three Williams Memorial lectures on the impact of flow variability on the likelihood of cooperation among international bilateral river basin
riparians.

Williams lectures honor the memories of the late Alan G. and Irene Williams, graduates of the University of Nebraska. A fund in their name, in cooperation with the NU Foundation, supports activities associated with the UNL Water Center.

The weekly seminar series runs through April 28 (except March 17). The free, public lectures are from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in the first floor auditorium of Hardin Hall in Lincoln (northeast corner of N. 33rd and Holdrege streets on UNL's East Campus).

Most lectures are videotaped and most speaker materials are available online at watercenter.unl.edu after they are presented. For more information, contact the UNL Water Center at (402) 472-3305.

Seminar cosponsors are the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and School of Natural Resources.
