No-till Whirlwind Expos at Stuart and Venango in June

No-till on the Plains will be hosting two Whirlwind Expos in Nebraska this month — June 15 near Stuart and June 17 near Venango. Speakers will include no-till and soil health experts from industry, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and private farms. A rainfall simulation of erosion and runoff under various soil covers and a soil pit will be part of the demonstrations.

Event speakers at both field days will include:

• Ray Ward, president of Ward Laboratories, Kearney, on the soil health benefits of no-till
• Dan Gillespie, NRCS no-till specialist, demonstrating erosion and benefits of residue cover with a rainfall simulator
• Paul Jasa, Nebraska Extension Engineer, on no-till planting equipment and system management
• Charles Shapiro, Nebraska Extension soil scientist, on soil fertility and the use of manure in no-till (Stuart site only)
• Continuous no-till producers: Stuart Expo — Kirk Laux of Bridgeport and Rick Beiber of Trail City, S.D.  and at the Venango Expo — Mark Watson of Alliance and Scott Ravenkamp of Hugo, Colo. These long-term no-till producers will present information about their operations, cropping rotations, no-till under irrigation, cover crops, and livestock integration into their no-till systems.

Stuart Expo Location

K&W Farms located ¼ mile east of 469th Ave and 887 Road, 6 ¾ miles north of Highway 20, starting at 8:30 a.m. The morning program will include a rainfall simulator demonstration and soil pit discussion of soil health. Lunch will be at the Atkinson Community Center, followed by  presentations by no-till practitioners and experts.

Venango Expo Location

The Steve Tucker farm located at 75740 Road 316, 2 miles west and one mile north of Brandon, starting at 8:30 a.m. (MST). The morning program will include a rainfall simulator demonstration and soil pit discussion of soil health. Lunch will be provided at the Venango American Legion Hall, followed by  presentations by no-till practitioners and experts.

Registration

Registration cost for the event is $30 and includes lunch. Pre-register online by June 10 at notill.org or by calling No-till on the Plains at 785-210-4549.

The expos are hosted by No-till on the Plains in cooperation with Nebraska Extension and USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, and are funded through a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust and other sponsors.
