Resources

In addition to CropWatch and Market Journal articles on ear rots, mycotoxins, grain drying, and livestock feed, the following resources were also recommended:

This year’s corn and soybean harvest has been one of bountiful yields, but also frustrating complications as wet conditions have caused delays and contributed to molds, ear rots, and in some cases, the accumulation of mycotoxins. In addition, grain suspected of being contaminated may need to be tested before it can be fed to livestock.

This Wednesday, November 18, UNL Extension specialists will address these issues during a live, call-in broadcast from 10 a.m. to noon. The show will be available live by satellite and on the Internet, linked from both the CropWatch and Market Journal Web sites. Later it will be available through a variety of other media outlets, including CropWatch and Market Journal.

“The cool summer, wet fall, and delayed harvest have exacerbated ear rot diseases on already vulnerable corn, much of which is still standing in the field,” Jackson said. “Although we see ear rots to some extent every year, they are worse this year in some areas and may require special attention to prevent further losses due to decline in grain quality and mycotoxin accumulation.”

Speakers and Topics

Panel speakers will include:

• Tom Dorn, Extension Educator in Lancaster County, who works with grain drying and storage issues
• Michael Carlson, Veterinary Diagnostic Toxicologist
• Tamra Jackson, Extension Plant Pathologist
• Duane Reese, Extension Swine Specialist
• and others as available.

The following topics as well as viewer questions will be covered:

• Handling and drying higher moisture grain
• Ear rots and grain molds
• Potential for mycotoxin accumulation
• Marketing options for high moisture corn
• Livestock sensitivities to mycotoxins
