USDA: Soybean Planting 83% Done; Corn, 97%

For the week ending June 7,  rainfall of one to two inches was common, with six inches or more reported across portions of the southeast, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Temperatures averaged two to four degrees above normal. The wet soil conditions again limited planting activities and were favorable for disease development in wheat. Alfalfa harvest continued to be challenging, with hay quality issues in some areas.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3% very short, 9% short, 69% adequate, and 19% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 5% very short, 15% short, 66% adequate, and 14% surplus.

Field Crop Report

• Corn condition rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 30% fair, 58% good, and 7% excellent. Corn planted was at 97%, near 100% for both last year and the five-year average. Emerged was at 89%, behind 97% last year and 95% average.
• Sorghum planted was at 59%, well behind last year's 89% and the average of 81%. Thirty percent had emerged, near last year's 32%, but behind the average of 46%.
• Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 26% fair, 58% good, and 10% excellent. Soybeans planting was 83% complete, behind 99% last year and the average of 95%. Emerged was at 59%, well behind last year's 89% and the average of 79%.
• Winter wheat condition rated 14% very poor, 19% poor, 29% fair, 36% good, and 2% excellent. Winter wheat headed was at 85%, ahead of 80% last year and the average of  73%. Turning color was at 10%, near 7% last year, but behind the five-year average of 16%.
• Oats condition rated 2% very poor, 7% poor, 26% fair, 62% good, and 3% excellent. Approximately 80% of the crop had jointed, well ahead of last year's 40%. Headed was at 39%, ahead of last year's 25% and the average of 31%.
• Alfalfa condition rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 26% fair, 55% good, and 12% excellent. Alfalfa first cutting was at 36%, behind 48% last year and the average of 52%.
• Dry edible beans planting was 23% complete, well behind last year's 56% and the average of 54%.
• Pasture and range conditions rated 3% very poor, 6% poor, 27% fair, 53% good, and 11% excellent.
