Placements of cattle into feedlots during March totaled 350,000, up 4% from 2006 and 17% above March 2005. Fed cattle marketings for the month of March totaled 370,000 head, the same as last year and 6% above March two years ago. Other disappearance during March totaled 10,000 compared with 15,000 during March 2006 and 10,000 during March 2005.
Nationally, cattle and calves in feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on April 1, 2007. The inventory was 1% below April 1, 2006, but 7% above April 1, 2005.
This is the second highest April 1 inventory since the series began in 1996. Placements in feedlots during March totaled 1.97 million, 7% above 2006 and12% above 2005. Marketings of fed cattle during March totaled 1.85 million, down 6% from both 2006 and 2005. Other disappearance totaled 72,000 during March, 20% below 2006 but 6% above 2005.
