Market Journal: Aflatoxin Found in Some Nebraska Counties

On this week's Market Journal Mike Carlson, UNL diagnostic toxicologist, and Tamra Jackson, extension plant pathologist, discuss the potential for aflatoxin. Carlson said the black light test for aflatoxins can give false positive results and recommends that a positive test can be confirmed with a lab test. He recommends livestock producers, especially poultry and dairy farmers, have corn tested if it comes from non-irrigated fields and there is some indication aflatoxins are in the corn.

Coming up next week: U.S. beef exports are gradually regaining some of the markets they lost due to BSE problems. Meanwhile pork exports, which benefited from the beef problems, are still strong but are slipping slightly. Hog prices are in an autumn decline, but prospects for 2008 are bright.

Market Journal is broadcast Fridays at 12:30 p.m. on DishNetwork NAUHS 9411, Saturdays at 7 a.m. on NET1 and Sundays at 9 a.m. on NETV2 (all times central). Visit the Market Journal Web site at marketjournal.unl.edu to watch current or previous programs.
