USDA Field Crops Report

Windy, warm conditions last week allowed planting to progress quickly. As of Sunday (May 20) corn planting was virtually completed, soybean planting was almost halfway complete and dry bean planting was underway in western Nebraska, according toUSDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Nebraska Field Office.

Corn planting increased rapidly due to favorable weather and was 92% complete by Sunday, even with the five-year average but behind last year’s 96%. Emerged corn was 59%, ahead of the 58% average but behind last year’s 64%.
Soybeans planting also increased significantly, but at 48% complete, was still behind last year’s 66% and the five-year average of 53%. About 9% of soybeans had emerged, behind last year’s 11% and the average of 15%.
Wheat conditions were largely unchanged from last week, with 1% very poor, 8% poor, 29% fair, 47% good and 15% excellent, well above last year’s 35% good or excellent condition. About 95% of the state’s wheat had jointed, near last year’s and ahead of the 92% average. About 29% of the state’s wheat had headed, behind last year’s 32% and near the average of 28%.
Oats were at 98% emergence, behind last year’s 100% and near the average of 97%. Oat condition declined from last week and rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 27% fair, 64% good and 6% excellent. This is above last year’s 65% good or excellent condition.
Sorghum planting was 29% complete, behind last year’s 36% but ahead of the 27% average. About 3% of the sorghum had emerged, 1% below last year’s and the average.
Alfalfa condition declined from last week and rated 3% very poor, 11% poor, 34% fair, 45% good and 7% excellent, remaining well below last year’s 64% good or excellent condition. First cutting was 7% complete, behind last year’s 24% and the average of 10%.
Pasture and range conditions rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 31% fair, 50% good and 9% excellent. Cows were being transported to summer pastures.
