Field Updates

Del Hemsath, Extension Educator in Dakota, Dixon and Thurston counties: Good drying conditions provided good timing for planting and field work. Corn planting will be completed by Friday (May 18) and about 50% of the soybeans are planted. Alfalfa is growing rapidly and the first cutting most likely will begin during the May 21 week if favorable conditions continue. Weeds are rapidly growing along with the crop. Wet conditions have kept sprayers out of the fields until planting is completed. With the recent good moisture, pastures are in need of fertilizer, but not much is being applied. Wheat looks very good with no significant problems.

Karen DeBoer, Extension Educator in Cheyenne County: With the recent warm weather and moisture, wheat is growing rapidly. Some producers had trouble controlling weeds, particularly mustards, earlier this spring with all the wind and cool temperatures. For the most part, the crop looks good. We have had reports of wheat streak mosaic in areas where we would expect it due to last summer's pre-harvest hail storms.
