Rusts reported in Midwestern states

The following is the latest information on wheat rusts from the Cereal Disease Laboratory in St. Paul, MN.

In mid April, stem rust was reported in winter wheat plots in Louisiana. Leaf rust was widespread in southern states with severities of up to 80% reported on susceptible cultivars. On April 21, leaf rust was reported for the first time in Kansas. It was found in Harper and Sumner counties in south central Kansas at very low severities (only a few pustules). On April 26, stripe rust was found on winter wheat at St. Paul, MN. It is thought to have originated from an overwintered infection.
