Field updates

Douglas Anderson, Extension Educator in Keith, Arthur and Perkins counties: Farming activity is just beginning for this season. There has been a little field work, but most producers are waiting for moisture. We had some snow last Week – it didn’t amount to much, but did slow the fever to get into the field. Wheat continues to be a concern. The freeze of a month ago slowed down things a great deal and now producers can just wait and see to learn how the wheat handled it.

Karen DeBoer, Extension Educator in Cheyenne County: Moisture received last Friday in the form of snow and rain slowed field work in our area this week. The wheat condition has improved a great deal since mid-March because of the moisture.

Steve Pritchard, Extension Educator in Boone and Nance counties: Producers are a little more optimistic this spring regarding soil moisture levels after receiving some very timely rain in early April. Cool season pastures and alfalfa fields are starting to green-up with recent rains and warmer temperatures. Producers are anxious to get into fields. Planting is likely to start in the next one to two weeks, weather permitting.
