Oat planting was underway in southern counties with 9% seeded statewide. Hay and forage supplies rated as adequate or surplus across most of the state.
Condition of cattle and calves rated 2% poor, 14% fair, 67% good, and 17% excellent, below year ago levels. Calving has progressed to 64% complete with some calf losses reported due to the late March snowstorm, but overall losses were below average.
Following are comments from Nebraska’s FSA County Executive Directors and Extension Educators: The March 18-21 snowstorm, which dumped up to two feet of snow in some areas, created havoc for livestock producers across the area. The snow and rain were welcome by all but the new calves. In some areas loss of calves was high if they were out in the snow; however, calves born before the storm and sheltered fared fairly well.
In central Nebraska there had been some field work, including stalk cutting, discing and fertilizer application. The report from Frontier County indicated that planting had not been started there yet.
