Ranching for Profitability series January 15-19

State and national experts will share information about current issues and topics important to ranch management and beef production during the Ranching for Profitability meeting series across western and central Nebraska in January. The meetings are hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Dates and locations are as follows:

January 15: Kimball, Event Center
January 16: Overton, Community Building
January 17: Broken Bow, City Auditorium
January 18: Bassett, Methodist Church
January 19: Valentine, Peppermill Restaurant
The program will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. local time. In the morning Harlan Hughes, professor emeritus, North Dakota State University, will speak on “What Profitable Ranches Do.” In the afternoon, Hughes will present a program entitled “Using Current Market Information to Plan and Make Decisions.”

Ivan Rush, UNL Extension beef specialist from the Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff, will bring perspective on the beef industry with a presentation entitled “The Last 25 Years – Foundations and Fads.” Rush was recently awarded the Industry Service Award by the Nebraska Cattlemen.

Rick Funston, UNL extension beef reproductive physiologist from the West Central Research and Extension Center at North Platte, will present a program entitled “Heifer Development and Supplementation.” This will be a timely topic as many producers are currently looking for cost-effective ways to develop replacement heifers with the rising cost of harvested feed.

To provide a meal count, preregistration is requested by at least one week prior to the meeting; contact the host extension office to register. The Ranching for Profitability meeting series is sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and Pfizer Animal Health with generous support from local sponsors.

For more information or to register for one of the meetings, contact the UNL Extension county office hosting the meeting.
