Regulations change Jan. 1 for manure application
Get informed at manure management and P-index meetings
Starting January 1, all permitted animal feeding operations in Nebraska will need to conduct phosphorus index assessments on fields before any manure can be applied. A series of UNL Extension meetings will be held this winter to provide information and tools to aid in meeting both state and federal regulations regarding field assessment and manure application.
In the Phosphorus Index Training Workshops producers will learn basic principles of phosphorus runoff from agricultural land and how that runoff is delivered to surface waters. Participants will learn to use and conduct practical exercises with two P-indexes. These assessments are required by the new manure application regulations. Producers are encouraged to bring a laptop computer that can open Excel spreadsheets if they have one.
Several meetings, as indicated below, also will include a Manure Use Planning Software Workshop. Speakers will introduce a software tool designed to guide animal producers in selecting appropriate manure and fertilizer application rates for individual fields. This tool provides the producer with documentation key to complying with the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality regulations for permitted animal feeding operations. The tool is an Excel spreadsheet developed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is free to producers.
The Manure Use Planning Workshop will be hands-on and provide producers with a plan for their own farm’s fields. Participants should bring soil test results and maps for three fields, plus any recent manure analysis to begin preparing software for their farm. Producers may bring their own laptop computer or use computers that will be provided. Cost is $15 per farm.
