UNL offers Organic Farmer Advisory Meetings in November

A series of University of Nebraska-Lincoln organic farmer meetings will be offered in November near Mead, Clay Center and Concord. The meetings will give organic and potential organic farmers and commercial gardeners an opportunity to hear about research efforts being made at the university's research sites. Farmers can discuss their ideas about potential research projects for organic and alternative farming, said Liz Sarno, UNL Extension educator and organic project coordinator.

"We want your input and we want to hear your concerns," Sarno said. "Come and be part of the process of creating a 21st century vision of alternative farming." Meetings are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dates and locations are:

Nov. 8, August N. Christenson Research and Education Building, UNL's Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead.
Nov. 15, South Central Agricultural Laboratory near Clay Center.
Nov. 20, Haskell Agricultural Lab near Concord.

Lunch will be served at the meetings. Call (402) 584-3837 to make lunch reservations at the Mead and Concord locations and (402) 762-4403 to make reservations at the Clay Center location.

Speakers also will discuss Adjusted Gross Revenue-Lite crop insurance for organic production, a whole-farm revenue protection plan of insurance. AGR-Lite offers an opportunity to insure that farm-raised crops such as organic commodity crops, vegetables, orchards, animals and animal products are eligible for protection.

The university also is working to develop online organic production workshops farmers can view at home or at local extension offices. Farmers are invited to weigh in on what topics should be addressed.

For more information about these meetings, contact Sarno at (402) 584-3856, (402) 326-8777.
