For the latest information and recommendations on wheat production in Nebraska, check these Web sites and add them to your Favorites List:
Increased costs for fuel and fertilizer, declining access to water for irrigation, and improved grain prices have all contributed to increased interest in winter wheat production. Some areas of the state will see a considerable increase in winter wheat seeding this fall compared to recent years. In these areas in particular, growers may need access to current information on wheat production to help them make well informed decisions. University of Nebraska Extension has several sources for this information.

On-line information sources include the Wheat Production Systems Web site at: wheatbook.unl.edu. Links to UNL Extension information on wheat and wheat production can be found along with a few selected links to non-UNL materials. Materials cover topics related to winter wheat varieties, soil fertility, seedbed and planting, weed control, insects, diseases, irrigation, economics, marketing, feeding and utilization, and fallow management. The site also has links to recent CropWatch articles related to winter wheat. Visitors to this site can sign up to receive e-mail notifications when new materials have been added to the site.

Another on-line resource from UNL Extension is the Wheat Varieties Virtual Tour at www.panhandle.unl.edu/wheat At this site growers can research wheat varieties recommended for their region of the state. Visitors can view three-year average yields for recommended varieties, compare wheat variety characteristics, and identify certified seed dealers who carry the varieties of most interest.

CropWatch is an excellent source of information on all Nebraska crops including winter wheat. Archived issues of CropWatch can be viewed at: cropwatch.unl.edu.

For those looking more broadly for information related to winter wheat, Nebraskawheat.com is a portal to UNL Extension resources on wheat as well as to information from the Nebraska Wheat Board and the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association.
