High Plains Ag Lab Field Day Aug. 8

Producers can view field trials of newly tested and recommended production practices for western Nebraska at this year’s High Plains Ag Lab Summer Crops Field Day. It will be held Aug. 8 at the UNL agricultural laboratory near Sidney. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., followed by lunch and speakers. Tours of field plots will begin at 12:30 p.m.

The program brings the latest information on new varieties and advances in crop breeding as well as a chance to view new practices in the field and learn what worked and why.

Tour stops and presentations by UNL specialists will cover the following topics:

Breeding for Drought Resistance in Dry Beans, Carlos Urrea, dry bean breeder;
Skip-Row Corn for Panhandle Producers, Alexander Pavlista, potato specialist;
Weed Control in Proso Millet, Drew Lyon, dryland cropping systems specialist;
Can Skip-row Grain Sorghum Work in the Panhandle?, Akwasi Abunyewa, graduate student;
New Proso and Foxtail Millet Varieties, David Baltensperger, alternative crop specialist;
Wheat Curl Mite Movement and Spread/Insects in Sunflower, Gary Hein, entomologist; and
Crop Rotation Changes at the High Plains Ag Lab, Tom Nightingale, farm manger.
