Deadline Jan. 1 for phosphorus field assessment

All fields listed by CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) as available for manure application will need to be assessed for potential phosphorus loss in runoff before manure can be applied after January 1, 2007.

CAFOs are usually large animal feeding operations, e.g. 1000 head of finishing beef or larger, but some medium-sized operations also are classified as CAFOs.

The Phosphorus Index should be used to assess the potential for phosphorus loss in runoff. The P index assessment for a field can be made any time, including after January 1, as long as it’s before any manure is applied to that field in 2007 or later. The results of the P index assessment need to be kept on file and the assessment needs to be repeated every five years.

Two P indexes are approved for Nebraska. An earlier index is available from the Nebraska NRCS Web site. A more recent P index and user guide (The Nebraska Phosphorus Index (2005): Background and Users Guide) are available online at UNL's Comprehensive Nutrient Management Planning Web site. The P indexes are not difficult to learn, and UNL Extension has conducted and will be conducting training on using the P index. NRCS field staff and some independent consultants also have been trained in using the P indexes.
