Reminder

No-till Field Day July 19 near Fullerton

Learn how no-till affects soil structure and health by examining a series of soil pits at a field day on Thursday, July 19, at the Craig Frenzen farm near Fullerton.

Speakers will include Butch Koehlmoos, general manager of the Lower Loup NRD; Craig Frenzen, Nance County farmer hosting the tour; Jill Clapperton, rhizosphere ecologist, Lethbridge University; Mike Hubbs, NRCS national agronomist; Randy Rink, no-till farmer from Pender; Ray Ward, owner, Ward Labs; and Paul Jasa, UNL Extension Engineer.

The field day will include threee one-hour soil pit presentations in the morning:

  • Pit 1 -- no-till irrigated soybeans into corn in a silt loam soil;
  • Pit 2 -- non-irrigated oats and field peas no-tilled into corn; and
  • Pit 3 -- conventional non-irrigated sorghum planted into corn in a silt loam soil.
    • Afternoon presentations will cover: no-till equipment, the "new agribusiness", and the Frenzen farm no-till operation. Lunch will be held at the Loup River Inn, one mile south of Fullerton on Hwy 14 and 1/4 mile east.

    The 2006 Whirlwind No-till Expo will be held at a site 5 miles north of Fullerton on Hwy 14.The day will start with registration at 8 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m.

    No-till on the Plains, a producer group from Kansas, is also hosting a five-day, four-night multi-state no-till bus tour July 31 to Aug. 4. The tour’s focus is to view economically viable continuous no-till production practices and to discuss the latest developments in those methods. Tour stops cover a spectrum of soils and climates .

    Featured stops will include: Gary Maskus. Arriba, CO; the Central Great Plains Research Station, Akron, CO; Brad Hansen, Hemingford, NE; Mike Arnoldy, Oelrichs, SD; Mike Zook, Beach, ND; Gabe Brown & Jay Fuhrer, Bismarck, ND; Dwayne Beck, Dakota Lakes Research Farm in Pierre, SD; and Ray Ward of Ward Labs in Kearney, NE. The tour also includes stops for the evening lighting ceremony at Mount Rushomre andlocal sightseeing.
