State and national cattle inventories up from 2005

Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 1.95 million cattle on feed on Aug. 1, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. The inventory was up 13% from last year and 11% above Aug. 1, 2004. Placements in the feedlots during July totaled 380,000 head, up 17% from 2005 and 23% above 2004.

Marketings of fed cattle during July totaled 410,000 head, up 1% from last year and two years ago. Other disappearance during July totaled 10,000 compared with 10,000 last year and 5,000 during July 2004.

Nationally, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.8 million head on August 1, 2006. The inventory was 7% above Aug. 1, 2005 and 10% above Aug. 1, 2004. This is the second highest Aug. 1 inventory since the series began in 1996.
