Manure management workshop and field tours Aug. 29

A manure management workshop and field tours sponsored by the University of Nebraska—Lincoln Extension will be August 29.

The workshop is directed at livestock producers interested in learning more about manure management. Some livestock producers are required by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality to have land applicator training as a condition of their NDEQ permit. Attending both the workshop and tours will qualify as land applicator training.

Morning tours begin at 9:30 a.m. at the University’s Scottsbluff Ag Lab, on Experiment Farm Road 5 miles north and 1 mile west of the Panhandle Research and Extension Center. Tour stops will include the Knorr Holden long-term manure plots, which have been planted to corn using manure-based fertilization since 1953. Discussions will include changes in phosphorous index, legal requirements, setbacks, yields, residual nitrates, soil sampling, and calibration kit.

Following lunch at the Research and Extension Center, the afternoon session will run from 12:15 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. at the Center. Topics include regulations, the value of manure, nutrient management planning, calibration of application equipment, methods of application, setbacks, and record-keeping and reporting requirements.

Registration deadline is August 23. To register, contact the Scotts Bluff County Extension Office at 632-1480.
