Planting advanced quickly last week as clear skies and above normal temperatures prevailed throughout much of the week, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 10% very short, 25% short, 63% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 34% very short, 41% short, 25% adequate, and 0% surplus. Pastures remain in poor or very poor condition across much of the western half of the state.

Crop Condition

• Corn planting was 84% complete, behind last year’s 97% and the average of 92%. Twenty-six percent of the crop had emerged, well behind last year’s 75% and the average of 49%.
   
• Soybean planting was 33% complete, behind last year’s 80% and the average of 58%. Two percent of the crop had emerged, well behind last year’s 39% and the average of 16%.
   
• Sorghum planting was 10% complete, behind 44% last year and the average of 28%.
   
• Wheat condition rated 20% very poor, 29% poor, 40% fair, 11% good, and 0% excellent. About 61% of the state's wheat crop had jointed, well behind last year’s 99% and 82% average. Wheat headed was 1%, well behind 77% last year and the average of 19%. Nationally, for the top 18 wheat-producing states, condition was rated at 21% very poor, 20% poor, 28% fair, 27% good, and 4% excellent.
   
• Oat condition rated 6% very poor, 6% poor, 44% fair, 42% good, and 2% excellent. Oat planting was 98% complete, behind last year’s 100% and the average of 99%. Eighty-one percent of the crop had emerged, behind last year’s 98% and the average of 93%. One percent of the crop had headed.
   
• Pasture and range condition rated 20% very poor, 49% poor, 26% fair, 5% good, and 0 excellent. Hay and forage supplies rated 36% very short, 43% short, 21% adequate, and 0% surplus.
