Winter Wheat Reports from Extension Educators

Winter Wheat Reports from Extension Educators

Karen DeBoer, Extension Educator in Cheyenne CountyThe wind has been a huge factor in terms of wheat condition in our area. Producers have been chiseling wheat fields to keep them from blowing. Time will tell how much damage there is to the wheat from the wind and cold temperatures. Much of the wheat was planted late last fall and had only a few leaves going into the winter. (1/28/14)

Greg Kruger, Extension Crops Specialist at the West Central REC in North Platte The extremely cold temperatures have been rough on any wheat that has crowns close to the surface. Without any residue to protect it, these plants could be in trouble.  We have had damage from cold temperatures and likely high winds as well.  I don't have a good feel for the extent of the damage.
