Wheat Production Workshop Aug. 4 at UNL Panhandle Center

A UNL Extension Wheat Production Workshop scheduled for Aug. 4 will focus on challenges from wheat stem sawflies, to kochia, virus and moisture. It will be held at the at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff.

Speakers from UNL, the US Department of Agriculture, and Kansas State University will provide the latest research-based information on addressing challenges facing wheat producers in the High Plains. The workshop is intended for producers, consultants, and extension educators.

Topics and speakers include:

  • Wheat Breeding: Dr. Bob Graybosch, USDA-ARS Research Geneticist
  • Wheat Stem Sawfly: Dr. Jeff Bradshaw, UNL Extension Entomologist
  • Kochia Resistance: Dr. Bob Wilson, UNL Extension Weed Specialist
  • Wheat Curl Mite and Viruses: Justin McMechan, UNL Graduate Student, and Dr. Everlyne Wosula, UNL Visiting Scientist
  • iWheat.org: Dr. Wendy Johnson, Post Doctoral Research Associate in Entomology, Kansas State University
  • Cover Crops: Dr. David Nielsen, USDA-ARS Research Agronomist
  • Water Use Efficiency: Gary Stone, UNL Extension Educator

The workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center, 4502 Avenue I, Scottsbluff. It is free, but registration is limited to the first 80 people. To register, contact Pat Martin at pmartin2@unl.edu or 308-632-1276. Registration closes July 28.

Morning coffee and doughnuts, as well as a steak sandwich lunch, will be provided. The workshop is sponsored by UNL Extension, with generous support from the Nebraska Wheat Board.
