CropWatch August 16, 2013
UNL and USDA-ARS have released Freeman, a new wheat variety well adapted to Nebraska's dryland conditions. Learn more about it, UNL's wheat variety trials (above), and recommendations from UNL Extension specialists for variety selection, planting date and rate, equipment adjustments, and crop protection as CropWatch shines a spotlight on wheat.
Corn Production
- Evaluation of Simulated Corn Yields Across Nebraska. The UNL Hybrid Maize model indicates how much late planting (after June 1) could affect corn maturity and yields this year. Some fields in northeast Nebraska may need an additional 8-17 days for grain fill and three of the locations studied have more than a 50% chance of seeing frost before corn maturity.
- Southern Rust Now Confirmed in 20 Counties; Severity Increasing Rapidly. Warmer temperatures forecast for the coming days in combination with high humidity and precipitation could support further disease increase.
Focus on Wheat Seeding, Production and Protection
- What's New in Winter Wheat Varieties? Freeman offers benefits for dryland production systems.
- Reviewing Wheat Variety Data and Selecting Seed for 2014. See which varieties fare better in what areas of the state and how you can use variety information to select good matches for your conditions and operation.
- Seed Treatments Strongly Recommended for 2014 Wheat Crop. Due to the increased prevalence of seed-transmitted diseases this year, certified, treated seed is highly recommended. Bin-run should be cleaned and treated too.
- How Seeding Date Affects Yield. Learn the recommended seeding dates for your area and why it's important to yield.
- Planting Too Early Can Affect Disease Development.
- What Wheat Seeding Rate is Recommended for Your Area?
- How to Read a Certified Analysis Seed Tag. Infographic details what the fine print on the label really means.

- Tips for Ensuring Successful Wheat Seeding. Recommended seeding depths and seeding equipment adjustments to ensure good stand establishment.
- Scout for Grasshopper Hot Spots to Protect Emergent Wheat. While overall grasshopper numbers are low, pockets in field borders or nearby fields could devastate newly emerging wheat.
- Weed Control Essential to Protecting Wheat Yield. Annual broadleaf weeds compete for water, light, space, and nutrients, reducing winter wheat yields by 10% a year.
- Compensating for Delayed Winter Wheat Seeding.
