Due to flood and excessive moisture throughout the state, Nebraska Farm Service Agency (FSA) is extending the deadline for reporting prevented planting to coincide with the final crop reporting deadline of July 15 for the 2011 crop year.

“Typically, producers are required to file a notification of prevented planting with FSA within 15 days of the impacted crop’s final reporting date,” said Dan Steinkruger, Executive Director for the Nebraska FSA. “However, crop year 2011 weather has been anything but typical.”

Failure to report prevented planting acres to FSA could adversely impact producer eligibility for FSA program benefits. If a request for prevented planting is filed after July 15, 2011, it is considered late filed and will require a late file fee to have an on-site inspection completed to determine evidence of the natural disaster condition.

Federal crop insurance policy holders are reminded to notify crop insurance providers of the planting conditions so insurers are aware of prevented planting circumstances. Steinkruger emphasizes that prevented planting reporting applies to all crops and FSA’s reporting deadline extension does not change preventive planting notification requirements.

“FSA’s prevented planting reporting extension was instituted by Nebraska FSA as a courtesy to producers who experienced delayed planting and are dealing with flooding or other problems,” said Steinkruger. “We want to make the best use of a producer’s valuable time and we know that, right now, the best use of their time is in the field.”
