Also on the Oct. 17 Market Journal:

Republican River Case — Dave Aiken, UNL Extension water and ag law specialist, reviews a case before the U.S. Supreme Court on the Republican River Compact.

Beginning Farmer Numbers — Over the last 30 years, the number of principle farm operators under age 35 has declined. That trend has been shown in each Census of Agriculture — until 2012. Dave Goeller, North Central Extension Risk Management Education Center deputy director, describes the growth and explains why Nebraska beginning farmer numbers might be increasing. For more information see Goeller's recent Cornhusker Economics article. Information on the Nebraska Department of Ag's NextGen Program can be found here.

Biodiesel Update — The US EPA has proposed changes that could alter requirements of the Renewable Fuel Standard, or RFS. John Hay, UNL Extension educator, talks about the U.S. biodiesel industry and its status under the RFS.

Weather Forecast — Al Dutcher, UNL Extension state climatologist, provides his forecast for the coming week.

Next Week

Harvest continues in Nebraska and across the country. Jeff Peterson, Heartland Farm Partners president, will join us to analyze corn and soybean markets. Brad Lubben, UNL Extension public policy specialist, will be on to discuss decisions farmers will need to make under the new farm bill.
