Landlord/Tenant Lease Workshops at 26 Nebraska Sites This Fall - UNL CropWatch, Oct. 14, 2013

October 14, 2013

This fall UNL Extension will host 26 Landlord/Tenant Cash Lease workshops to help landlords and tenants develop a lease that is right for both parties while maintaining positive farm lease relations. As crop budgets tighten, it is more important than ever to learn the latest information about leasing options and issues.

Program topics will include:

  • The latest information about land values and cash rental rates for the area and state
  • Expectations from the lease, including goal setting for the rental property
  • Lease termination, including terminating handshake or verbal leases
  • Lease communication, determining appropriate information sharing for both the tenant and landlord
  • Alternative cash lease arrangements, flexible provision considerations for your situation
  • Other topics as time allows, such as irrigation systems, hay rent, pasture rental agreements, and grain bin rental

A team of UNL Extension Educators, including Allan Vyhnalek, Jessica Johnson, Monte Vandeveer, Robert Tigner, and Tim Lemmons, will present information as well as practical approaches for landlords and tenants. They recommend that, when possible, both the landlord and tenant (and spouses) attend together.

This workshop has been held extensively across Nebraska for the past two years with over 2,200 attending. The vast majority of landlords and tenants said they found the workshop very helpful in improving communications, setting rental terms, and learning about the use of flex lease provisions. Sixty-seven percent of those surveyed afterward said they would do more with managing their land contracts and more than 50% said they would increase family communication regarding their leases, based on what they learned at the workshops.

Registration and Information

This free workshop is sponsored by the Nebraska Soybean Board and the North Central Risk Management Agency. Refreshments and handouts are provided. Register by calling the Extension office in the host county at least three days before the workshop to ensure there are enough handouts and refreshments.
