Market Journal: Using Ethanol Byproducts as Feed

Market Journal: Using Ethanol Byproducts as Feed

February 12,2007

This week's Market Journal looks at using ethanol byproducts as cattle feed and how composting the resulting manure can provide benefits. Watch or listen as host Doug Jose visits with Jennifer Ramsey of Organic Nutrient Solutions, Inc., and Galen Erickson, UNL extension beef feedlot nutrition specialist.

Ethanol byproducts make cost effective livestock feeds but do result in slightly higher phosphorus levels in the resulting manure. Composting the manure reduces the bulk that has to be transported to achieve environmentally safe distribution, is weed seed free and the nutrients are more stable when applied to fields. Compost also has a variety of potential commercial markets.

The Feb. 17 Market Journal will look at what's behind the numbers in today's cattle grading system. Guest speaker will be Dennis Burson, UNL extension meats specialist.

Market Journal — UNL Extension's television for ag business decisions - is broadcast Fridays at 12:30 p.m. on Dish Network NAUHS 9411 and Time Warner Cable Channel 21 in Lincoln; Saturdays at 7 a.m. on NET1; and Sundays at 9 a.m. on NET2.
