Wheat Variety Tour June 7 near Wilber

May 25, 2007

A UNL Extension wheat plot tour will be held Thursday, June 7, near Wilber to showcase educational information on the latest varieties of wheat. The tour will begin at 10 a.m. in wheat variety plots hosted by Mark Tachovsky of Wilber.

To reach the site, from Wilber, travel west on Highway 41 to the Swanton 76D intersection and travel south 4 miles to County Road T intersection. The plot is on the west side of the road.

This year's plot includes 29 varieties of wheat, according to Extension Educator Randy Pryor in Saline County who is coordinating the event.

Stephen Wegulo, UNL extension plant pathologist, will discuss yield effects of foliar diseases on wheat. He sprayed replicated strips at the site with fungicide on May 16 and will discuss these plots and management strategies to lower disease risk. He also will tackle the tough question of whether fungicide application on dryland wheat pays.

Steve Knox, manager of the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association, Len Nelson, UNL Crop Variety Specialist, and Steve Baenziger, UNL wheat breeder and researcher, will talk about wheat varieties for southeast Nebraska. Also, UNL Extension Entomologist Bob Wright will talk about integrated pest management options for insect control in wheat and Extension Educator Paul Hay from Gage County will discuss nutrient management strategies to reach higher yield potentials. A noon meal is free and being sponsored by area agribusinesses.

For more information about the tour, contact Randy Pryor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension office in Saline County, (402) 821-2151, or e-mail rpryor1@unl.edu.
