Upcoming No-till Field Tours

Upcoming No-till Field Tours

June 29, 2007

No-till on the Plains, Inc., a Midwest no-till organization, is planning two events for Nebraska this summer. Partially funded through a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, the group will host expos July 18 near Pender and August 22 near Bladen.

The July Whirlwind No-till Expo will feature hands-on learning opportunities featuring expert speakers and experienced local no-tillers. The day-long event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Randy Rink farm three miles east of Pender on Highway 94 then 1 mile south on 20th road.

The second event will be August 22 at the Brian and Keith Berns' farm one mile east of Bladen.

The expos will feature soil pits and in-field demonstrations, including one with a rainfall simulator to show how continuous no-till benefits the soil.

"The Whirlwind Expo gives farmers an opportunity to learn about continuous no-till firsthand, to get their hands dirty on the farm of a successful no-till practitioner," says Brian Lindley, program coordinator for No-till on the Plains, Inc. "With this kind of meeting format, participants can ask questions of the experts and get immediate, practical answers."

Another event, the Points North No-Till Bus Tour, will be July 31-August 3. This is a wonderful chance to candidly discuss production practices and management challenges with people committed to long-term success with no-till and to meet fellow no-tillers in various stages of no-till adoption. The air-conditioned motorcoach tour features a spectrum of soils and climates. Stops will include the Dakota Lakes Research Farm at Pierre, South Dakota with Dwayne Beck and UNL's Rogers Memorial Farm at Lincoln with Paul Jasa as well as other farm stops. Ray Ward of Ward Labs at Kearney will be a guest speaker.

No-till on the Plains is a farmer-run group that promotes practical and scientific application of continuous no-till farming.
