Sorghum Field Day September 5 at Byron

August 24, 2007

The 2007 Sorghum Hybrid Test Plot Field Day will be Wednesday, September 5 at the Loren and Ryan Bohling farm at Byron. The event starts at 5 p.m. with a tour of the Hybrid Test Plot, which is located 3 miles east of Byron on the south side of Hwy 8. The hybrid plot is sponsored annually by the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Producers Association, UNL Extension, the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, participating seed companies and agribusiness.

"We'll have representatives from the commercial seed companies on hand to discuss their plot entries," said James Vorderstrasse, NeGSPA Director and Plot Coordinator. "Farmers will be able to see and compare hybrids for themselves."

A barbeque dinner, featuring sorghum brownies for dessert, will be served at 7 p.m. The evening program will include an address by a National Sorghum Producers representative on the 2007 Farm Bill and provisions of particular importance to sorghum producers' bottom line. Speakers also will discuss the proposed national sorghum check-off and the industry's focus for the future.

The event will also include a yield guessing contest and door prizes.
