Nebraska Cattle on Feed Down 6%, National Down 7%

Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.37 million cattle on feed on January 1. This inventory was down 6% from last year and 7% below January 1, 2007. Placements during December totaled 345,000 head, down 3% from last year and 12% below December 2007.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of December totaled 340,000 head, up 1% fromlast year but 3% below December two years ago. Other disappearance during December2008 totaled 15,000 head, compared with 10,000 head in 2007 and 2006.

Nationally, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.2 million head on January 1, 2009. The inventory was 7% below January 1, 2008 and 6% below January 1, 2007. Placements in feedlots during December totaled 1.65 million, 3% below 2007 and 4% below 2006.

Marketings of fed cattle during December totaled 1.68 million, 2% above 2007 and4% above 2006. Other disappearance totaled 76,000 during December, 31% above2007 but 14% below 2006.
