For the week endingMay 17, limited precipitation allowed producers tomake considerable planting progress. It was another cool week with temperatures averaging four degrees below normal. Only small amounts of precipitation were reported for much of the state. The East Central and South East Districts averaged a half inch or more of precipitation. Temperatures ranged from the low 80's to below freezing in the Panhandle.
Crop Report

Corn planting increased rapidly with the favorable weather and was 93% complete, a week ahead of last year's 79% and three days ahead of the 88% average. Forty-six percent of the corn had emerged, ahead of last year's 19% but even with the average.

Soybean planting were 62% complete, 10 days ahead of last year's 23% and a week ahead of the 41% average. Soybean emergence was at 8%, ahead of last year's 1% but even with the average of 8%.

Wheat conditions rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 21% fair, 64% good, and 13% excellent, above of last year's 60% good or excellent condition. Wheat jointed jumped to 85%, ahead of last year's 72% and near the 86% average. Wheat headed was 2% complete, near last year's 1% but nine days behind the 20% average.

Alfalfa conditions rated 0% very poor, 3% poor, 21% fair, 68% good, and 8% excellent, above last year's 73% good or excellent conditions. First cutting was 3% complete, near last year's 2% but behind the average of 6%.

Oat conditions rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 8% fair, 82% good, and 9% excellent, above last year's 80% good or excellent conditions.

Sorghum planting was 24% complete, ahead of last year's 16% and average of 21%. Sorghum emergence was at 1%, ahead of last year's 0 but near the 2% average.

Dry beans planting were 8% complete, ahead of last year's 0 and ahead of the 3% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 0% very poor, 3% poor, 23% fair, 64% good, and 10% excellent, above last year's 67% good or excellent condition. Pasture growth remains slow due to below normal spring temperatures and rainfall.
