Demonstration of rainfall impact on soil erosion
Dan Gillespie, NRCS no-till specialist, uses a rainfall simulator to demonstrate how rainfall affects soil erosion at the 2008 Northwest Nebraska No-Till Field Days.

The Panhandle No-till Partnership will be hosting a no-till field day June 15 at the Barney and Jermae Steger farm near Chappell beginning at 9 a.m.

This tour will look at a variety of crops, including winter wheat, field peas, oats and peas for forage, corn, proso millet, milo, and sunflowers. There also will be a discussion of cover crops and side-by-side comparisons of chemical fallow wheat and wheat behind peas and oats.

Directions: From the east edge of Chappell, go north on Road 167 to Road 26. Turn east on 26 and go to road 171. Turn north and go 1/2 mile. For more information on this field day, contact Mark Watson, NRCS no-till education coordinator, mwatsonntec@charter.net

The Upper Niobrara White Natural Resource District will be hosting the Northwest Nebraska No-till Field Days June 24 at the Watson Brothers Farms in Box Butte County and June 25 on the Curt Roth Farm near Clinton in Sheridan County. A wide range of topics related to no-till crop production will be covered, including cover crops, soil quality, water conservation, crop rotation, and equipment. The Watson Brothers Farm tour will include no-till sugarbeets.
