USDA: Corn Growth Continues to Lag; Soybeans Near Average - UNL CropWatch, Aug. 19, 2013

Most of the state saw another week of cooler than normal temperatures, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. In many areas warmer temperatures are needed to advance crop maturity.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 13% very short, 31% short, 55% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 26% very short, 38% short, 36% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Field Crop Conditions

All corn condition rated 5% very poor, 7% poor, 23% fair, 45% good, and 20% excellent. Irrigated corn conditions rated 79% good or excellent, compared to 75% average. Dryland corn conditions rated 45% good or excellent, compared to the average of 59%. Corn in dough was 69%, behind 92% last year and 78% average. Corn dented was 11%, well behind 65% last year and 33% average.

Soybean conditions rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 23% fair, 56% good, and 16% excellent. Eighty-eight percent of the crop was setting pods, near last year's 90% and the average of 86%.

Sorghum conditions rated 7% very poor, 17% poor, 29% fair, 33% good, and 14% excellent. Sorghum heading was 77%, ahead of 74% last year but behind 81% average.

Oats harvested were 94%, behind last year’s 100% and 99% average.

Dry bean conditions rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 11% fair, 66% good, and 19% excellent. Ninety-two percent of the crop was setting pods, behind 95% last year but ahead of the 89% average.

Alfalfa conditions were 4% very poor, 12% poor, 30% fair, 47% good, and 7% excellent. The third cutting of alfalfa was 59% complete, behind 93% last year and the average of 69%.

Pasture and range condition was 13% very poor, 21% poor, 36% fair, 28% good, and 2% excellent.
